Northstowe is a proposed new town of approximately 10,000 homes to the North West of Cambridge. It aspires to be an exemplar and vibrant 21st century town enabling more sustainable lifestyle choices and patterns of living.
In 2007 Gallagher and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) submitted planning applications for the entire Northstowe site. Extensive public consultation was carried out and the overall response was an encouraging one.
During 2008 and 2009 the economy slipped into recession and following the Government's Spending Review in October 2010, the A14 road improvement scheme was withdrawn.
In October 2011 Gallagher and the HCA undertook pre- submission consultation on the new master plan for Northstowe (the Development Framework Document) and proposals for Phase 1. The Development Framework Document (DFD) sets out the principles to guide the scale and disposition of development for the whole town.
In November 2011 the Government’s Autumn Statement included a commitment to increasing capacity and improving performance on the A14. Work has since started on an interim scheme worth nearly £28M to improve conditions on the A14 which is due to be completed by March 2015. See the Connectivity page for further information on the main A14 improvements.
The DFD and an outline planning application for Phase 1 were submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council in February 2012. The DFD was endorsed by the Northstowe Joint Development Control Committee (NJDCC) on 20 July 2012 as a material consideration for the determination of future planning applications. The latest version is available under Media & Downloads.
On the 24 October 2012 the NJDCC resolved to grant planning permission for Phase 1. Following the recommendation, our aim is to work towards the S106 being signed by mid-2013.
This website sets out an up to date vision for the new town and approach to development which we hope you will find stimulating and thought provoking.
